A Miscellany of Baker Perkins’ Bits and Pieces
Shields, Plaques, Boxes and Ashtrays
-
A plaque from the Baker
Perkins (New Zealand) Ltd office in Auckland.
- Two letters from the signage – “BAKER
PERKINS LIMITED WESTWOOD WORKS” that graced the front elevation of the two-storey
office building on Westfield Road.
- Cast plaque inscribed “Rose of Gainsborough”. This was the badge of Rose Brothers (Gainsborough) Ltd and is thought to be the origin of Cadbury’s “Roses” chocolate selection.
- Gavel from the Baker Perkins (NZ) Ltd office.
- Reverse side of the above plaque (1) from New
Zealand. The label reads – “This plaque is made from
centuries old timber excavated from the building site of Baker
Perkins (NZ) Limited in 1962”.
- Shortage of foundry capacity after the end of
WW2, led to Baker Perkins acquiring, in 1947, the Alliance
Foundry in Luton. Alliance developed a new and
extremely accurate “cast-to-size” process and it is
possible that this little box was produced as an example of their
prowess.
- A cast ashtray depicting four Lincoln Imps
produced as a sales aid (give-away) by Rose Brothers (Gainsborough)
Ltd. The reverse describes the company as – “Packing,
Wrapping and Labelling machinery Specialists”.
